Voice assistants, automated lighting, security cameras, and smart thermostats get all the attention, but the technology that makes all of these devices work reliably and efficiently typically hides completely out of sight.
Behind the walls, above the ceilings, and below the floors is a network of electrical wiring that either supports a smart home or holds it back. Most homeowners discover this the hard way… after investing in expensive smart devices that underperform, drop connections, or simply fail to deliver.
Getting the foundation right before loading it with smart technology changes everything. At Mr. Electric, we address electrical wiring and the infrastructure as much as we pay attention to the smart devices.
If you are planning a remodel, building a new home, or upgrading your current system, now is the perfect time to think ahead with a certified electrician. Continue reading or contact Mr. Electric to learn more.
WiFi sounds like the perfect smart home solution: No wires means no mess, no installation complexity, and complete flexibility. That sounds great… until the video doorbell freezes, the smart thermostat loses its connection overnight, or the whole system slows to a crawl when everyone in the house jumps online.
WiFi works well for many things, but it has real limitations. Modern smart homes contain dozens of connected devices; Running all of them on wireless connections creates congestion and unreliability.
A hardwired backbone using Cat6 or Cat6A network cabling solves these problems permanently. These cables carry data at significantly higher speeds than most wireless connections can achieve, with zero signal degradation from walls, interference, or distance.
Power over Ethernet, commonly called PoE, allows a single Cat6 cable to carry both internet data and electrical power. This matters enormously for smart home devices.
Without PoE, each device needs two separate runs (a network cable and an electrical wire). With PoE, one cable handles both jobs.
With PoE, installation becomes simpler and less expensive because one cable does two jobs, devices can mount anywhere a cable reaches rather than only where electrical outlets exist, and power gets managed centrally, making it easy to reboot devices or cut power remotely.
Controlling lighting from a phone, automating scenes for different times of day, dimming lights with a voice command sounds straightforward… until the electrician in Holladay, UT opens the switch box and finds a problem.
Most smart switches require neutral wires to function correctly. Neutral wires complete the electrical circuit by providing the constant small amount of power smart switches need to maintain their connection to the home network even when lights are off.
Previous electrical wiring practices ran only hot and switch-leg wires to light switches, which worked fine for simple mechanical switches… but it leaves modern smart switches without the power they need to operate properly.
Retrofitting neutral wires into existing switch boxes requires running new electrical wiring, and that’s work that a qualified electrician can perform correctly. Contact the pros at Mr. Electric for an assessment and/or retrofitting.
Technology changes quickly, but good infrastructure lasts for decades.
By investing in modern electrical wiring, Cat6 or Cat6A cabling, PoE where it makes sense, neutral wires, deep electrical boxes, and flexible conduit, you create a home that is ready for whatever comes next.
Contact Mr. Electric today to schedule a consultation. We'll help you build a strong foundation that keeps your smart home running smoothly for years to come.
