EV Charger Installation: Can a Local Electrician Assist With the Process?

With electric vehicles (EVs) becoming increasingly common on the roads, more homeowners and businesses are considering an onsite EV charger installation. Whether you're tired of waiting in line at public charging stations or want to enjoy the savings of charging at home, having your own EV charging station makes a ton of sense.

Here’s the thing: the benefits of an EV charger are only fully realized when it’s installed correctly. A poorly installed EV charger can cause electrical issues, safety hazards, or performance problems that cost more in the long run. That’s why it’s not just a good idea - it’s always advisable to hire a certified electrician for the job.

In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Electric, we offer our two cents on the matter. We'll break it down by charger level and look at why certified expertise matters. If you're looking for a uniformed and certified electrician in the Salt Lake City area, then consider Mr. Electric for reliable and affordable service.

Level 1 Chargers: Low Effort, Low Power

Level 1 chargers are the simplest and most basic type. They plug directly into a standard 120-volt household outlet and typically come with the EV. No special installation is required, which is why many EV owners start here.

There’s a trade-off, however: level 1 chargers are very slow. We're talking about adding just 3–5 miles of range per hour of charging. For daily commuters or those with limited driving needs, this might be enough - but if you want to fully charge overnight, then it may not cut it.

Typically, you won't need an electrician at all. You should contact an electrician, however, if your outlet is old or not grounded properly, or if you notice heat, buzzing, or flickering when using the outlet. A certified electrician can inspect the circuit, confirm that it’s safe, and make any necessary updates for peace of mind.

Level 2 Chargers: The Sweet Spot for Most Homeowners and Small Businesses

Level 2 EV chargers are the most popular choice for residential and light commercial installations. They use a 240-volt outlet (like what you’d use for a clothes dryer) and can add up to 60 miles of range per hour. That means most EVs can go from nearly empty to fully charged overnight.

With that said, installing a level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240V circuit. This involves running wiring to the area and perhaps upgrading your electrical panel - all in compliance with building codes and regulations. Even if you consider yourself handy, this is not a DIY project. Mistakes can cause overloaded circuits, fire risks, voided warranties, and even serious injury.

A certified electrician will perform a load calculation, secure necessary permits, and ensure that your charger is installed safely and efficiently.

Level 3 Chargers (DC Fast Chargers): For Commercial and Fleet Use Only

Level 3 chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, are industrial-grade units capable of charging an EV up to 80% in as little as 30 minutes. These are most often seen at public charging stations, fleet yards, and commercial complexes.

The high-voltage (480V+) infrastructure alone demands the expertise of a trained and certified electrician. In fact, the costs and power requirements are so high that DC fast chargers are often not recommended - or even available - for homeowners. For commercial property owners or businesses operating EV fleets, these chargers are worth the investment.

Again, certified electricians are non-negotiable here. This is industrial-level electrical work that must meet strict safety and compliance standards. The risk of fatality is very real here.

Why a Certified Electrician Matters - No Matter the Level

EV chargers may seem simple on the surface, but they interact with your entire electrical system. That means any installation - especially levels 2 and 3 - needs professional planning and precision. With something as critical as your vehicle’s power source, there’s no room for guesswork.
